Forest certification is a procedure whereby an independent third party inspects forest management and utilization practices to assess compliance with a set of ecological, economic and social standards for sustainable forestry. Growing environmental awareness coupled with consumer demand for more socially responsible business practices helped the emergence of forest certification as a credible mechanism for communicating both environmental and social performance of forestry operations. There are several certification systems presently recognized in North America including Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) and Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes (PEFC).
On December 11 2009 The Rainforest Alliance’s SmartWood program announced that the Coast Forest Conservation Initiative (CFCI) had received Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) forest management certification for forest tenures within the Mid Coast Timber Supply Area (TSA).
